Silkyara Bend – Barkot Tunnel Why in news
A part of around 300 metres in length from Silkyara Bend side of tunnel is collapsed due to which 41 Workers are Trapped.
As of know a six inch pipe is used to provide food and water to workers. New Machine are placed at the top of hill and are planning to drill into the tunnel to evacuate the workers.

Silkyara Bend – Barkot Tunnel is a project under chardham all weather road. Under this project a tunnel of 4.531 Kilometres is constructed between dharasu and Barkot on Dharasu Yamunotri National Highway.
The Tunnel will be two lane in width and will reduce the travel time between dharasu and Yamunotri by an hour. It will reduce the travel distance by 25 Kilometres.
This project is constructed under Ministry of Road transport and highways. Silkyara Bend – Barkot Tunnel will improve the connectivity and improve the economical Condition of the people. Tunnel is constructed over geographic plate which make this project very challenging in the Himalayas. Soft soil of the hill is making construction difficult.

This tunnel will improve the connectivity between Yamunotri Dham and Gangotri Dham in Uttarakhand. Present road is very narrow so it become traffic challenge during Chardham Yatra. So a tunnel was proposed to facilitate easy movement of traffic.
This tunnel will improve connectivity between Rishikesh and Yamunotri. It will help residents of Dharasu, Silkyara Bend and Barkot.
